Tree removal cost in Ontario, CA depends mostly on the tree's height and spread, what sits underneath it, how hard it is to reach, and whether you want the stump ground and the wood hauled. A small tree in an open back yard is a short job. A tall eucalyptus over a roof, with every limb lowered on ropes, can be a full crew day. That is why honest tree services quote after seeing the tree rather than by the foot over the phone.
The biggest price factors
Every removal is different, but these are the factors that move the price the most:
- Size. Height, trunk diameter and canopy spread decide how much wood there is to cut, lower and haul.
- Targets. A tree over a roof, pool, block wall or the neighbor's garage has to be taken down in small pieces with rigging. A tree in open ground can often be dropped in larger sections.
- Access. Many Ontario lots have narrow side yards and gates. If the chipper cannot reach the back yard, brush has to be carried out by hand.
- Condition. Dead and decayed trees can be brittle and unpredictable, which slows the work.
- Power lines. If the tree is within 10 feet of a line, Southern California Edison has to make it safe first.
- Stump and roots. Stump grinding is usually a separate line.
- Wood. Hauling everything away costs more than leaving the wood cut to firewood length.
Species matters
Some species are simply harder to remove. Eucalyptus are tall, heavy and often hang over homes on older Ontario streets. Pines and ficus have huge root systems and resin or sap that slow the work. Palms are a different job altogether: tall fan palms are taken down in sections from the crown, and their fibrous trunks are heavy. Our palm tree trimming page covers palm removal.

Permits can affect the plan
If the tree is in the parkway between the sidewalk and the curb, it is a City tree. In Ontario, no one may remove a parkway tree without prior authorization from Public Works. If the City approves removal, it may do the work itself. Read our post on parkway tree rules in Ontario before you budget for a street tree.
In nearby cities, private trees can be protected too. Rancho Cucamonga requires a permit to remove heritage trees on private lots, and La Verne protects oaks. A permit application or an arborist report can add time and cost before the tree comes down.
How to compare estimates
A fair comparison means comparing the same scope. Make sure every estimate you get spells out:
- Which trees are being removed, and how far down the trunk will be cut.
- Whether the stump will be ground, and how deep.
- Whether brush and wood are hauled away, left cut to length or chipped on site.
- How the crew will protect the lawn, roof, walls and hardscape.
- Who is responsible for any City or HOA approvals.
Check that the contractor's license is active on the CSLB license check and covers tree work. Our guide on how to hire a tree service goes into more detail.
Ways to keep the cost down
- Combine jobs. Removing one tree and pruning two others at the same visit is cheaper than three separate calls.
- Keep the firewood. Leaving wood cut to length saves on hauling.
- Clear the work area of cars, furniture and planters before the crew arrives.
- Act early. A dead tree gets more brittle and more dangerous to remove each season.
- Prune instead. Sometimes tree trimming solves the problem without a removal at all.
A note on very cheap bids
A bid far below the others is worth a closer look. Ask whether it includes cleanup, whether the crew is covered by workers' compensation, and whether the contractor has a CSLB license. Tree work is dangerous, and an injured worker on an uncovered job can become the property owner's problem.
Get a real number
The only way to know what a removal will cost is to have someone look at the tree. Send photos through the form or call (909) 479-2614, and we will give you a written estimate for tree removal. Many of our jobs are within a short drive of Cucamonga-Guasti Regional Park, so we can usually visit quickly.
Common questions
Is stump grinding included in tree removal?
Usually not unless it is listed. Most estimates treat stump grinding as a separate line so you can choose. Ask each contractor whether the stump will be cut flush, left a foot high or ground below grade, because that changes both the price and what you can do with the spot afterward.
Why do two estimates for the same tree differ so much?
Usually because the scope differs. One bid may include rigging, stump grinding and hauling, while another leaves the wood and the stump. Other reasons are workers' compensation coverage, licensing and the equipment each company brings. Compare line by line before choosing.
